"To dream the impossible dream..."
"Never invest in a business you can't understand." – Warren Buffett The Life Science industry is like the snakes in the Caduceus medical symbol; the snake venom can kill investor dreams or can be turned into a drug generating healthy returns. XOventure help protect you with operational best practice, and deliver high returns by working with world class specialists having the know-how "to safely milk the snake for venom".
We build with the investors: During the last 20 years we have worked in numerous environments and company settings around the world, be it on our own as entrepreneurs or with others. Over the years our network has grown, having worked with hundreds of consultants and experts; of those we have managed to keep close the high performers we respect and trust to deliver results, these are the ones we combine into relevant teams for each task.
We evaluate, prioritize and recommend what is required to build the company, to solve the critical issues at hand, meet the next milestone ahead or orchestrate the required exit. We offer: Pre-emptive Due Diligence: Make sure the company has no hidden landmines. Preclinical development: Invest in the right candidate, makle sure to terminate the wrong one early! Cartoon Comment:
The Life Science industry is blessed by the fact that no single investor really understands what he/she is investing in – and so does no one else, not even the Founders. Added to this is a history of false optimism based on certain ignorance and manipulation: We all bought too quickly the miracles that came promised by buzz words like genomics, proteomics and gene therapy, spiced with some directed-evolution and high-put-through-screening of billion-compound-libraries from exotic sources. For all of us it has been hard to accept the fact, that in spite of having the best Nobel price winners, the best specialist and investors on board things still go bad: It is far more comforting to blame it on the FDA or poor recruitment in clinical trials, than face the fact that board and/or CEO were in the dark, sometimes even when it came to basic operational issues. XOventure has dealt with life science companies in-depth to understand where and how it goes wrong. It is not a single diagnosis like "the FDA has become more rigorous", it is the consequence of the multifactor complex and risky processes of delivering a first-of-a-kind drug or device – and building a company around this challenging task. The solution propagated lately has been "go virtual"; while this certainly creates focus and has its benefits, it does not solve the main issue that no single individual or board can master the complex task of developing life science porducts. What helps?
